Electric Vehicle (EV) Number Plates – Green EV Plates for Zero-Emission Vehicles

At Bedford Number Plates, we specialise in electric vehicle number plates – also known as green EV plates – designed for zero-emission vehicles such as battery electric cars (BEVs) and hydrogen fuel cell vehicles (FCEVs). Each plate includes the official green flash on the left-hand side, clearly signalling your EV status while remaining fully road legal and MOT compliant under BS AU 145e regulations.

In addition to their distinctive style, these plates can offer practical benefits in certain locations. For instance, many drivers ask, “Can electric vehicles use bus lanes in Bedford?” As of 2024, the answer is yes – in Bedford, some bus lanes allow fully electric cars with a legal green EV plate to use them. However, because local rules can change and vary from one area to another, it’s always best to check the most up-to-date guidance with your local council before taking advantage of this benefit.

• Green with UK & Union Jack – For travel in certain European countries without an extra UK sticker.

Frequently Asked Questions – EV Number Plates UK

Can electric vehicles use bus lanes in Bedford?

Many drivers search online for answers to the question, “Is driving an electric vehicle in the bus lane in Bedford allowed?” As of April 2022, fully electric cars with a legal green EV plate may be permitted to use certain bus lanes in Bedford. However, because bus lane rules can differ from town to town and may change over time, it is always best to check the latest information with your local council before using a bus lane in your electric vehicle.

What cars qualify for green number plates in the UK?

Only zero-emission vehicles are eligible for green EV plates in the UK. This includes Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs) and Hydrogen Fuel Cell Electric Vehicles (FCEVs). In contrast, plug-in hybrids, full hybrids, and mild hybrids are not eligible, as they still rely partly on petrol or diesel engines.

Do plug-in hybrids get green EV plates?

No. Although Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEVs) can run partly on electricity, they also have a petrol or diesel engine. Therefore, they are not classified as zero-emission vehicles and are not eligible for a green electric vehicle number plate.

Are green EV plates legal in Europe?

Yes. If you select the green with UK & Union Jack badge, it is recognised in certain European countries, which means you may not need an additional country sticker. Nevertheless, because regulations vary between countries, it is always wise to check the specific requirements of your destination before travelling abroad in your EV.

Do electric cars get free parking in the UK?

In some UK towns and cities, electric cars can benefit from free or discounted parking, especially if they display a legal green EV plate. However, these schemes are location-specific, and rules change regularly, so always check with the local council or parking authority before relying on this benefit.

Can hybrid cars get green number plates?

No. Hybrid cars, including plug-in hybrids (PHEVs), full hybrids (HEVs), and mild hybrids (MHEVs), do not qualify for green number plates because they still produce tailpipe emissions and are not classed as zero-emission vehicles.
